STATE REVIEWING SOLID WASTE LAW
Once again, the Ohio Legislature is putting House Bill 592, the law which created solid waste districts, under the microscope. Although this kind of review has happened before, it has never been in a climate of such economic downturn where all government programs and expenditures are scrutinized for their necessity and cost effectiveness. Is Ohio getting it's money's worth?

Twenty three years ago, Coshocton, Fairfield, Licking and Perry Counties joined to form a solid waste district. We offer countywide recycling services, mostly in the form of dropoff sites with containers for residents to place materials. Each county has a department that offers educational programs to increase awareness of recycling opportunities. In addition, we fund solid waste sanitarians within Health Departments to monitor landfills, deputies within the Sheriff Offices to enforce anti-litter laws, hold collection drives periodically for tires and appliances, and fund two litter collection supervisors to clean public roadways.

To pay for these programs, each person in our counties pays about $3.25 per year, depending on how much trash you put in the local landfills.

We want to know what you think. Call or e-mail and tell us how we're doing. What can we do better? How much do these services mean to you and your family? Policy Committee members and their phone numbers are listed on our website and they'd like to hear from you!
